Survive and advance
By now, you’ve probably seen the apocalyptic footage from Gevvie’s heat in the single. But just in case, here’s a look:
Despite the insane conditions, Gevvie not only advanced, but also won her heat, and will next race in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Single tomorrow at 8:20 AM EST(Tuesday, 8/10). There’s a great interview with Gevvie on Row2k about her heat.
Josh and Andrew had a far less eventful race, finishing 2nd in the their heat, less than two seconds behind the 3-time world championship medalists from Norway, Are Strandli and Kristofer Brun. The result places directly into the A/B semifinal on Wednesday.
So, so far, so good for both of our crews, qualifying for the next round of racing directly from heats, and avoiding the repechages. This is particularly important because all racing scheduled for Sunday was cancelled, and so the repechages and the semi/quarterfinals would have been on back-to-back days for both boats.
The US also advanced the women’s pair, double, quad, eight; lightweight men’s four; and men’s pair and four to the next round of competition. The lightweight women’s double and men’s eight will race race in the repechages later in the week, for a chance to advance to the next round of competition.
Go USA!
